Jan Svankmajer
Surrealist Czech Animator
"Unless we again begin to tell fairy tails and ghost stories before going to sleep and recounting our dreams upon waking, nothing more is to be expected of our Western civilization."
- Jan Svankmajer
Born in Prague in 1934, Jan Svankmayer is one of those directors who very few know, as his specialty is foreign art-house surrealism with a heavy influence on historical works and fantasy. Add the fact that looking at his name might make you wince at the attempt of its pronunciation and you don't even need to add damning words like 'stop-motion' and 'short films' before he's hurtled into obscurity. Sadly, Jan Svankmajer (pronounced Yan Svank-my-er) is one of those artists who exists in a world where usually only aficionados and obsessives visit. As you can see I've focused on him quite a bit and I thought I'd start a little page of his filmography, complete with reviews of his usually weird, sometimes funny and often disturbing works.
