#94. Mutiny On The Bounty (1935)
Why It's In The Book: "Epitomizing the classic Hollywood spirit, Frank Lloyd's Mutiny On The Bounty is a masterwork of studio moviemaking. The film's spare-no-expense canvas, travelogue quality, and moral center result in an adventurous take of remarkable beauty... in the end the film is perhaps most memorable as an early high-water mark for the art of production design." -1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die

"I've always had a soft spot in my heart for seafaring films, and this one hit all the right notes for me."

"When the sail opens and captures the wind, ah! It was like the ship was coming to life and blooming before our eyes."

"The interaction between the three men is so interesting and fun to watch that any missteps in the film’s middle third are almost completely forgiven. Bligh's pure evil and Christian's pure goodness clash magnificently. Their constant close proximity aboard the ship only enhances their contempt for one another. It has to be one of cinema’s epic personal battles, and I couldn’t have enjoyed watching it more."

"Boat movies are usually pretty dull for me (excluding Jaws, of course), but Mutiny on the Bounty was just the opposite. Everything that took place on the boat was fascinating, and then as soon as they got to the island everyone's suddenly in love and humble and simple and whatnot."

"I would recommend Mutiny on the Bounty to anyone who would like a high seas adventure and doesn't mind getting a little seasick."

"Expecting Clark Gable to be the next swashbuckling, knife-in-the-mouth, sail-carving Douglas Fairbanks-grade stunty front-man for this film, it quickly became apparent that Mutiny On The Bounty would honor the true tale of a crew who'd suffered enough at the hands of the now-infamous Captain Bligh."

"A strong and captivating tale, caught in some genre cliches of the time, that does manage to save itself from being boring towards its finale by humanizing various characters, and creating great thrills."

"Overall, and enjoyable adventure story. The cinematography is pretty impressive, but I definitely think it would have been better shot in color."

"Mutiny is swashbuckling gay and gaily swashbuckling, and the agnostic ethicalities keep it fresh enough to be considered contemporary; that is to say: there are no good guys and no bad guys, and everyone really is trying to figure out how to run away to paradise."

"So is it okay or not okay to commit mutiny? I am undecided and the principle of that dilemma is such a good story that a movie needs little else."

"With a list of quintessential 1930's films a mile long, one could both argue for or against Frank Lloyd's 1935 high seas drama Mutiny on the Bounty."

"All in all, I really appreciated and enjoyed the technical aspects of this film, but the one-dimensional characters and unnecessarily emphasized romantic subplot made it hard to enjoy."
